Mallorca Wines: Have you tried them yet?

Mallorca has a history of wine production (the Greeks and Romans loved Mallorcan wines) which was all but wiped out by the blotrytis blight or 'noble rot' at the beginning of the 20th century. In the last few years however, wine production has been steadily increasing and now there are about 60 wine estates on Mallorca which produce around 300 wines. We can honestly say that there are some very, very tasty wines here - many wines have won prizes! See the link for more information about Mallorca Wines

Mallorca Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a key ingredient in the Mediterranean kitchen. What many people don't know is that Mallorca now produces excellent olive oil and there are a variety of different brands to choose from, and they have been given a Denomination of Origin (like wines), so look out for the 'Oli de Mallorca'.

We are happy to see that many chefs in Mallorca are also using this product very creatively - for instance, Marc Fosh from Simply Fosh restaurant in Palma combines Olive Oil with chocolate and fruit berries for a stunning explosion of tastes and textures in the mouth! More about Mallorca Olive Oil here

Mallorca Food: Pa amb Oli

Pa amb Oli literally means bread with oil - it is a simple dish, but very popular. Mallorcan bread (very like soda bread) is used - olive oil is spread on it, then a tomato is opened and spread over that. Add some cheese from Mahon (very tasty cheese from the neighbouring island of Menorca) and Jamon Serrano (ham). A lot of restaurants in Mallorca offer this typical dish, and you will find many varieties.

Mallorca Food: Coca by Chef Carlos Blanco

The Mallorcan 'Coca' is a typical dish which has as its base a biscuit - the chef's creativity comes into play with what is put on top of that base - normally it's tomato and vegetables.

In this case, chef Carlos Blanco from Casal Santa Eulalia in Can Picafort, showed us how he serves his Coca Mallorquina

The Delicious Mallorcan Ensaimada

Anyone visiting the island of Mallorca has probably tried the traditional ensaimada. Usually sweet, it's a great accompaniment to the popular 'café con leche'. We had the pleasure of trying a rather special ensaimada made with the typical sobrassada - which lends it a savoury flavour and a reddish colour - see more about the Mallorcan Ensaimada

Over 200 Mallorca Restaurants Profiled

It's been quite an intense five years of investigation for us! We have got to know so many excellent Mallorca Restaurants and their chefs. We have learned a lot about the gastronomy and culture of this island - and it really does have a lot to offer - from all that is grown and produced here (almonds, olives, figs, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, potatoes, artichokes, cabbage, asparagus and much more) to the huge variety of seasonal fish and seafood available, as well as the lamb and pork delicacies (sobrassada is the sausage that is traditionally made from the Mallorca black pig). The cheeses are very tasty - made on the island from sheep and goat's milk. You won't find too many cows here anymore, but we have spotted the odd ones on our travels! Wines are also a fabulous find - there are now about 300 wines produced on Mallorca, and many have won awards here and abroad. You'll find a variety of Mallorca Wines offered in the over 200 Mallorca Restaurants that we have profiled on SkyBlue Mallorca: the most complete Food & Wine guide for Mallorca. Enjoy!
